Fed: Downer says 16 dead in Jakarta -- one Australian treated

The death toll from a car bomb in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta has reached 16-- most of them Indonesians.

And Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says many more are wounded after the blast inthe five-star Marriott Hotel yesterday -- including an Australian who needed 30 stitches.

Mr DOWNER's told the Nine Network the injured man has been discharged from hospital.

And he says another Australian in the hotel has been traumatised by the experience.

Mr DOWNER says the attack appears to bear the fingerprints of the terrorist group JEMAAHISLAMIYAH, which was responsible for the bombing that killed 202 people in Bali last year.

But Mr DOWNER says yesterday's blast appears to have killed mostly Indonesians ratherthan the foreigners the perpetrators were probably targeting.

He says only two or three of the dead are thought to have been foreigners.

Mr DOWNER says the bombers probably chose that particular hotel because the Marriottchain is American-owned.
