Rugby legend backs wood fuel campaign

RUGBY legend JPR Williams is calling on householders inCarmarthen to help Wales become a low carbon nation by making thechange to wood fuel, a cleaner, greener and more efficient way ofheating the home.

The former WRU and British Lions star, who has been using a woodburning stove to heat his home in the Vale of Glamorgan for the pastnine years, is backing a new campaign by Woodfuel Wales, the WelshGovernment-funded body which represents all sectors of the Welshwood fuel industry.

The campaign is encouraging householders across Wales to considerusing wood as a form of biomass fuel to heat the home, in line withthe Welsh Government's 2020 target of reducing greenhouse gasemissions by at least 40 per cent compared to the 1990 level.

The call by JPR Williams comes as Wales gears up for the start ofthe muchanticipated Six Nations tournament at the weekend.

The former captain is appealing for people to focus on supportingthe nation's future as well as its team.

Passionate He said: "Wales is a passionate nation and when we getbehind something we have the power to make great things happen."

To lead the way in tackling carbon reduction in Wales, theNational Assembly for Wales announced that it was almost half waytowards achieving its own target of reducing carbon emissions by 40per cent across the organisation by 2015.

During 2010/2011, carbon emissions reportedly fell by 19 per centcompared to the previous 12 months, and some of this reduction wasattributed to the installation of a biomass system at the Senedd inCardiff.
